Well, it took half an hour of fairly concentrated faffing about but I've finally managed to get a set up which will un-DRM and convert Kindle e-books so I can read them on my phone. I could, of course, have just downloaded a copy of the damn book, but I thought I'd experiment. I'm still on the wrong side of the law, and given that I already own a paper copy of the book, my legal position hasn't actually changed at all, but I feel a bit better about it and I've learned something so I guess that's good. And I now have a way to convert all the ebooks I own into txt format, which I'll be doing for archive purposes I think.
This was all prompted by seeing that I'll be able to download a kindle app for the phone I'm going to buy (about which I am WAY TOO EXCITED). A friend has the regular Desire and I was fiddling around and liked the look of the ebook reader she had installed so I may or may not use the kindle app - it depends largely on whether I can scroll using the volume buttons on the side (something FBreader does allow) as that allows me to read one handed and without having to move my fingers to turn the page, something it took me a while to find for my current phone (why are there so few good apps for the N97, eh?).
In the end though, I just don't like DRM'd stuff - I've been through too many format changes for it to feel safe. I'll likely buy eBooks from Amazon while I can unlock them, but the unlock already needs an old version of Kindle for the PC. As soon as Amazon lock that version out from downloading, I'll have to go back to just bittorrenting things. Or wait for the market to finally give up on DRM, like the music market did, I suppose.

I want the publishers to get over this ridiculous thing - ebooks should not be as expensive as they are when crippled with DRM. In the meantime, since I can't make it work how I want, my response is just to be lazy - there's plenty of good stuff to download legally from gutenberg or in fanfic, and anything else I buy from my local bookstores. (aka, I am jealous that you have a system that works for you.)

It might be better on your Desire's bigger screen. I'm almost certainly going to be upgrading to one of the Desire line (waiting for the new ones to come out to see how they compare in the hand).
